Charleston, South Carolina
In 1670, Charleston, South Carolina was settled by English colonists, who first named the harbor town Carolopolis, which is Latin for “Charles”, and Greek for “city”. Later that year, Carolopolis was renamed Charles Towne. “The philosophy of early Charles Towne was based on religious tolerance, for tolerance would increase the numbers and profitability for the settlement. Charles Towne’s openness towards all religions attracted French Huguenots, Baptists (known then as Anabaptists), Congregationalists, Presbyterians, a Jewish congregation, a Lutheran Church, a Roman Catholic Church, and a Methodist assembly. Because of its origins for religious diversity, Charleston became known as "The Holy City."”
