Quebec City, Canada
Initially a single fort founded by French explorer Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) in 1535, Quebec City, Canada is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. From 1604-1607, French explorer Samuel de Champlain (c.1580–1635) participated in the exploration of the area, and, in 1608, established and named the new settlement Quebec. The name Quebec comes from the Algonquin, a Native American language, word kébec. Kébec means "where the river narrows", making reference to the area around Quebec City and Levis, on the opposite bank, where the Saint Lawrence River thins.
