Savannah, Tennessee
Savannah, Tennessee’s name is derived from the Taino, the indigenous people of Hispaniola, and their word zabana, which means "open plain." Savannah is the modern county seat of Hardin County, named for Colonel Joseph Hardin (1734–1801), an American soldier and statesman. As a member of the North Carolina Colonial Militia, and a minuteman during the Revolutionary War, Hardin fought against the British, and distinguished himself in battle. In 1786, as was the custom of the day, Colonel Hardin was awarded a land grant of several thousand acres in what later would become Hardin County, Tennessee.
