Punta Gorda, Belize
In 1823, Garifuna settlers from Honduras founded Punta Gorda, Belize, or “fat point” in Spanish. For many years, PG, as dubbed by the locals, was little more than a small fishing village that could only be reached by boat. However, the area started to grow when it served as a R&R locale for the British Army. When the army left Punta Gorda in 1999, the hospitality industry began to flourish!
