Nashville, Tennessee
In 1779, Nashville, Tennessee was originally named Fort Nashborough, after the American Revolutionary War hero Lieutenant Colonel Francis Nash (1742-1777). In 1777, Nash joined General George Washington's Army at the historic Battle of Brandywine and commanded the 1st North Carolina Regiment. At the Battle of Germantown, on October 4, 1777, Lieutenant Colonel Nash was mortally wounded and died three days later. General Washington respected Nash, and knew him to be a “brave and worthy soldier.”
